| | RealSurge | Oct 19, 2007 9:51am | I was just wondering what other people think about superhero origins, from anywhere. I have found a few sites on the subject, dealing with the science and whatnot.
Here are a few of my queries:
What causes Superheroes and Super-villains to be created about or near the same time as the hero? or the villain? and If a hero is born with no adversary what does he/she do until there is a foe?
I am also curious if all possible super origins have been explored?
On this site: link
The author explains that all origins can fall into three categories or into any combination of said categories, I agree with the author for the most part for I can not come up with a better summary.
Also, I was wondering if anyone has any theories on the actual physics behind super-characters, for example, how Superman flies or how Giant-man can change his height without his mass collapsing in on himself?
The best explanation for this I have found so far is the BEM Theory, explained here on this site
I'm just wondering if any other person has any theories on these subjects. |

As far as the science end of it goes I am interested, but I look at some of the characters as biend from universes with different fundamental properties for explaining such things like mass, strength, energy and such.
I had a look at your links and found them very interesting. Thumbs up.
One explanation I heard for Supermans flight and strength and his invulnerability was due to his body aura. It was a simple and elegant answer for me. I liked it.
I havent read it anywhere, but I believe that no hero or villain CAN exist without a counterpart. I think its something to do with universal balance. There always has to be a balance. Otherwise, eventually, one side or the other wins and then its game over. The way I look at it they all put all their skills into winning a battle and keep doing that ALL the time. lol
My interests in the superheroes and villains would be a number of characters from DC comics and Marvel. I am also interested in the psychology behind a lot of the characters. Like how their perception changes when they first gain power. |

In regards to your response of a villains and heroes have to co-exist, I like the way it was explained in the film 'Batman Begins' that it is escalation, you know, you build a big gun, I build a bigger gun and so on,
which lines up with the whole universal balance theory.
Going with you last comment, the one about the psychology behind characters gaining powers... That could also partially explain why some become heroes, and the others villains. |

M. Night Shyamalan's film Unbreakable (2000) revolves around some of the ideas Dreamchaser68 brings up. (Despite the vague back-of-the-box summary, it's actually a superhero movie.) It's worth a look if you haven't seen it. |

In some sense the character behind the one Bruce Willis portrayed "could" be a superhero type person. If I am understanding the background of the story correctly. |
